TM participates in consultations on Maldives’ SREP investment plan

A representative from Climate Governance Integrity Project of the Transparency Maldives has participated in the consultations on the draft Investment Plan (IP) for Scaling up of Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) — a programme funded under Climate Investment Funds.

With the acceptance of the IP by the sub-committee of CIFs, the Maldives could get US$30 million to scale up renewable energy in the country. The IP, which contributes to the Maldives’ goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020, envisages that US$130 million will be invested for renewable energy projects in the Maldives.

At the meeting, TM representative made comments on the governance aspects of the proposed institutional structure for carrying out SREP in the Maldives. In particular, TM representative pressed for greater financial accountability, transparency, and participation of civil society and island councils.
