Climate Governance Network

One of the main activities under Transparency Maldives’ CGIP is the formation of a Climate Governance Network. This network aims to exchange information and knowledge, assist with data verification and  work together to create transparency and integrity in the handling of climate related funding, both at the state and private levels.

Currently, this network has members representing government ministries, non-governmental organizations, media and individuals interested in the field. Membership of the Network will stay open and interested persons are always welcome to contact the project team at Transparency Maldives to become a member.

The first meeting, where the Network was officially established, was held on 8th January 2012. The workshop was conducted as follows;

  1. Introduction of the project and details of the ongoing work.
  2. Sharing the progress of the Mapping of Climate Finance in the Maldives with participants. Following this, participants shared ideas on how to make the process of mapping (of climate change related projects, funding and relevant institutions) more effective and how to present the results in a more constructive form. This exercise proved very useful in many ways. One of which is that the data verification process has been made stronger and more dependable, while another is that Transparency Maldives gained the opportunity to learn what other stakeholders expected from the Mapping. This is an immense contribution towards making our Mapping more comprehensive.
  3. Presented a short overview of the Scaling-up of Renewable Energy Programmes Framework and encouraged stakeholders to send in their comments by the deadline provided.
  4. Formed smaller discussion groups and brainstormed about the three following topics;
  • Mapping of the National Climate Finances. The mapping criteria/guidelines were shared and commented on.
  • Governance Risks. The thoughts that the group shared provided insight existing governance gaps and how we can better address them
  • Discussed ways in which participants could contribute to the Climate Governance Integrity programme. Through this discussion, possibilities of sharing knowledge and resources were explored
